Red Digital Cinema is out to shake up the world of digital cinematography, and make high-quality results more affordable.

The company displayed their new high-definition, modular-designed Red One camera at NAB last month, declaring it to be the “world's first large format digital camera with integrated recording…ultra High Definition in the palm of your hand.

Red Digital’s “Leader of the Rebellion Ted Schilowitz introduced the new unit to WEVA NEWS MINUTE video producers Sue Lawson and Bruce Himmelblau.

Red Digital, founded by self-titled Madman Jim Jannard, the founder of the Oakley sunglasses and eyeware empire, notes the Red One weighs less than seven pounds and is designed to record in resolutions as high as 4520 x 2540 using its “Mysterium sensor that is large enough to shoot with standard 35mm film camera lenses. The company plans to make the various components of its new system individually upgradeable.

While "typical high-end HD camcorders have 2.1M pixel sensors and record with 3:1:1 color subsampled video at up to 30fps," says Red Digital, "we deliver 11.4M pixels at up to 60fps and record RAW, or 2x over-sampled HD in 4:4:4 or 4:2:2. That's more than 5 times the amount of information available every second and a vastly superior recording quality.

The new Red One camera ($17,500 without lenses or hard disk recorder) is an example of innovative HD technology being aggressively priced to compete in the rapidly evolving world of digital cinematography. For more information visit
