Sony's HVR-V1U HDV Camcorder

Weighing in at only 3.6 lbs, Sony’s HVR-V1U HDV camcorder still proves to be a heavyweight in performance. WEVA NEWS MINUTE producers Bruce Himmelblau and Sue Lawson caught up with Sony Electronics' Sean O’Reiley for this exclusive WNM close-up of the HVR-V1U.

Offering 60i in addition to 24p/30p progressive scan (as well as 2-3 pull-down recording), this recent entry in Sony’s HD line-up provides wedding and event videographers with a lightweight, mobile design and the ability to simultaneously record on both tape and the (optional) 60GB HVR-DR60 hard drive system.

The camcorder's features include: Minimum illumination rating of 4 lux (with F1.6 at 18 dB); Memory Stick Pro Duo; an HDMI output; and "true 24p" capture. List price for the HVR-V1U is $4,800, and $1,800 for the optional HVR-DR60 mountable hard drive.

Utilizing a combination of the 3-chip "ClearVid CMOS Sensor" system to deliver its high-resolution images plus EIP technologies, the HVR-V1U boasts the ability to capture video images at up to 240 fields per second, thus allowing very fast movements to be recorded without creating artifacts or signal degradation.

Exciting new SD/HD products and accessories will be available for hands-on demo at the WEVA 17th Annual Wedding & Event Video Expo August 13-16 2007.

Attendees at the WEVA 16th Annual Wedding & Event Video Expo, held this week in Las Vegas, were the first to get their copies of WEVA International's brand new Wedding & Event Videography Resource Guide, co-produced by WEVA and CMP Entertainment Media (CMPE), publishers of Videography, DV, and Government Video magazines.

Watch the official announcement made to the packed ballroom of videographers on Opening Night of WEVA EXPO 2006 by WEVA International Chairman Roy Chapman, and Doug Krainman Group Publisher of CMPE's Video Division - captured on this WEVA NEWS MINUTE video produced by Bruce Himmelblau and Sue Lawson.

The brand new 48-page Resource Guide contains reports on new wedding and event video creativity, production techniques, new technology, and successful marketing strategies for videographers. Features include "hands-on" reviews of Panasonic's new HVX200 HD camcorder and Primera's BravoPro DVD Publisher. "How-To" articles include a Sony Vegas 6 tutorial on creative wedding editing.

In addition to in-depth articles by longtime WEVA International members Mike Nelson, Gary Kleiner, Mitch Ives, John Zale, Stu Sweetow, and bridal business expert Tom Quiner of Breakthrough Marketing, the magazine also features a New Product Guide with snapshot views and reports on new hardware and software, including JVC's new GY-HD110U and HD-200U camcorders, NewTek's Tricaster Pro, Edirol's R-4 Field Recorder, Sony's HVR-A1U camcorder, 16x9's new Grab & Shoot Bags for DV cameras, and many more.

"CMPE has a stellar reputation of producing high-quality media, and major industry conferences," Chapman said. "With the addition of the WEVA publications to our arsenal of video titles, CMPE covers the broad range of video professionals -- from event videographers to feature film cinematographers," said Krainman. WEVA's new Wedding & Event Videography Resource Guide co-produced by WEVA and CMPE, "is the first dedicated specifically to serving the needs and interests of wedding and event videographers," said WEVAs Director of Association Communications Dan Argenas.

"The premiere issue shows that our new association publication will be much more than a directory of industry vendors and their company descriptions," Argenas said. Both the online and print versions will combine the extensive resources of both CMPE and WEVA to offer our members a wide range of cutting-edge reports on new and emerging technologies, wedding and event video shooting and editing techniques, video artistry, new product reviews, system-specific tutorials, spotlight articles on WEVA members, plus new marketing information, and more."

Argenas added, "This new and expanded communications vehicle will offer WEVA International members more than just a print magazine, and more than a strictly online approach to providing wedding and event video news and features for our members. It represents an advanced multi-media integration that combines the best of both print and web-based delivery formats. In other words, a total solution."

WEVA and CMPE, Argenas noted, have been in strategic media partnership discussions for over a year. At NAB 2006, Sony hailed HDV as “the fastest-selling format launch in Sony Professional history and introduced two brand new HDV recording decks to complement the recently released HVR-A1U compact camcorder, and its larger HVR-Z1U cousin.

The HDV camcorders were a popular draw at the Sony exhibit area. So was the projected footage from a recent expedition up Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa that had been documented with the A1U. Key features of both HDV camcorders were highlighted on-site for WEVA NEWS MINUTE producers Sue Lawson and Bruce Himmelblau.

Sony's new HVR-M25U and HVR-M15U decks both offer HDV 1080i, DVCAM and DV SP recording and playback to ease the migration to high-definition. Both decks are compatible with MiniDV and standard-size cassettes that allow over four hours of HDV recording with compatible tapes. In addition, both decks have a down-conversion function from HD to SD and are switchable between 60 and 50 Hz (NTSC/PAL).

Other shared features include the ability to copy external timecode through the "HDV/DV in TC" feature and a range of connectivity options, including the i.LINK (IEEE-1394) digital interface, component output, S-Video I/O, composite I/O, and analog audio I/O.

The HVR-M25U (about $3,300 street price) adds a ClearPhoto LCD plus 2.7-inch 16:9 panel and an HDMI output for connections to consumer TV sets. The model's Edge Crop adjustment is designed to adjust edge crop areas manually while down-converting. The HVR-M15U (about $2,200 street price) is a compact unit that can be positioned either horizontally or vertically. Both HDV models are scheduled for shipping this month.

Go hands-on with many of the exciting new products displayed during NAB at the WEVA 16th Annual Wedding & Event Video Expo Trade Show in August at exotic Mandalay Bay.

BravoPro is designed for unattended, hands-free burning and direct-to-disc printing. Simply specify the files you wish to duplicate, add a print file if desired, select a quantity and click on the “Go! button. BravoPro requires no assembly; when it’s out of the box, it’s ready to go.

The Bravo II is an advanced "all-in-one" disc publishing system that burns and prints up to eight, 2-hour DVDs in an hour. It combines fast, automated robotic CD/DVD duplication along with full-color, 4800 dpi direct-to-disc printing - all in one compact, desktop unit. Bravo II is ideal for producing either one at a time, unique discs or jobs of up to 50 discs at a time. Models include both Windows-based PC and Mac duplication software.

Red Digital Cinema is out to shake up the world of digital cinematography, and make high-quality results more affordable.

The company displayed their new high-definition, modular-designed Red One camera at NAB last month, declaring it to be the “world's first large format digital camera with integrated recording…ultra High Definition in the palm of your hand.

Red Digital’s “Leader of the Rebellion Ted Schilowitz introduced the new unit to WEVA NEWS MINUTE video producers Sue Lawson and Bruce Himmelblau.

Red Digital, founded by self-titled Madman Jim Jannard, the founder of the Oakley sunglasses and eyeware empire, notes the Red One weighs less than seven pounds and is designed to record in resolutions as high as 4520 x 2540 using its “Mysterium sensor that is large enough to shoot with standard 35mm film camera lenses. The company plans to make the various components of its new system individually upgradeable.

While "typical high-end HD camcorders have 2.1M pixel sensors and record with 3:1:1 color subsampled video at up to 30fps," says Red Digital, "we deliver 11.4M pixels at up to 60fps and record RAW, or 2x over-sampled HD in 4:4:4 or 4:2:2. That's more than 5 times the amount of information available every second and a vastly superior recording quality.

The new Red One camera ($17,500 without lenses or hard disk recorder) is an example of innovative HD technology being aggressively priced to compete in the rapidly evolving world of digital cinematography. For more information visit

Catapult Captures Directly to iPods
The palm-sized Catapult is the world's first device to allow capture of video footage directly to iPods or virtually any USB drive. Editing can begin immediately eliminating the need for digitizing.

The new Catapult was exhibited at NAB last week and captured for this WEVA NEWS MINUTE video by WNM producers Bruce Himmelblau and Sue Lawson.

Catapult plugs into the FireWire port of any DV/HDV camcorder and adds exciting features to capturing video, including time lapse and trigger-based events, as well as pre and post record functionality.

By offering a standard USB 2.0 connection, Catapult has been designed to take advantage of many popular storage devices. Catapult, for example, has a convenient piggy-back neoprene pouch designed to hold an iPod or even a 2½" USB drive. For those with greater storage needs, virtually any USB 2.0 drive system can be connected, including multiple terabyte systems.

Utilizing built-in rechargeable batteries, Catapult is capable of continuous recording in excess of three hours. The Catapult can also be powered with the included AC adaptor.

Adding Catapult to your camcorder gives you additional recording features, including time lapse and trigger-based events, as well as pre and post record functionality.

Using the Pre and Post-Record settings, for example, you can set Catapult to begin recording for a preset amount of time prior to actually hitting the record button on the camera especially useful for live action events.

The completely configurable Time Lapse feature allows the recording of frames of video at specific intervals like for the pre-party set-up of a ballroom, for example. Catapult, from camcorder accessory maker Bella, is priced at $300 and set to be available later this year.
